Hm. The Maayan calendar apparently stops On Dec 21, 2012. We should ask Maayan to print properly for 2013.

Calendars of the civilizations in the bygone eras were true in the past. There is no trace of two big civilizations which were highly advanced in science & technology. Atlantis and Lemuria were matchless in their prowess for developing this planet which we inhabit now. Then we have great symbols of architecture from Egyptian and Mayans.
Everything functions like clock-work. We cannot change the Creation-Destruction cycles set in motion at the very beginning. They had brilliantly predicted the occurrence of important events in their calendars which i find to be true with two world wars Earth had faced. Let us see what happens after Dec 21,2012
Your comments are longer than my post :D..I mean i am flattered
I am skeptical of ‘one big event destroys all’ theory. Sounds too cinematic to me…
My hunch is several small events evolving over a long period of time at one point usually produces big results.
I have no clue on the extinction of dinosaur - in fact I am double checking on the spelling of dinosaur even as I write this. One of the few creatures who never watched jurassic Park
I quickly scanned Wiki, as usual I find multiple theories and, at the risk of cited as a victim of confirmation bias, I do find some references to confluence of factors, etc.
Throw more light if you will. I am all ears. Most of the big worldly phenomenon I have read and observed are almost always due to multitude of factors - wars to flight crashes to epidemics. I think the world is very complex to try and explain in a simple ‘one cause acounted for one effect overnight’ model.
Am no expert in that either.. your skepticism on the possibility of such an event prompted my reply.. the event might have no precursor, but that doesnt mean that it cant happen. it may not happen by dec next year and the possibility of such an event in the near future may be unlikely.. But taken as a seperate factoid, the probability may tend to zero, but it is never a zero..
Mani, Yes P tending to 0 isn’t 0 but I would not worry about it so long as its close to zero. I can think of lot more events which has a P tending to zero or maybe more likely but I am not able to quantify now.
Do we talk about the whole population dying of incurable cancer (or any disease for that matter ) which can also spread in air, water, etc? Of course that probability is also not zero.
And i think people think about Maayan Calendar a lot more than it deserve just because it’s newsworthy, it’s spectacular.
Worrying about this is more like folks worrying about kids killed in an air crash (any aircrash is always more news worthy) while happily letting kids play near the innocuous looking swimming pool in their apartment which has killed more children.
All this reminds me to read Jared Diamond’s COLLAPSE which I have been having in my book shelf for long.
