North Usman Road flyover

As much as i crib about the government functioning, i thnk it’s only fair that i appreciate when something happens the way it should. The DMK-alliance govt had assumed power in May 2006. The flyover on the North Usman Road - Kodambakkam high road junction was commissioned a few months later I suppose, was thrown open to traffic last month.

I am not sure about the time overrun or cost overrun on this project, but from a ‘podhu janam’ perspective, this should go down as one of the better projects in terms of execution. I tried the Kodambakkam High Road from Vadapalani last week during peak hour and all but managed to get to Nungambakkam in about 15 minutes. I am yet to gather opinions from those who commute regularly from that area on the ease of congestion, but I guess at least the execution of this flyover project deserves special appreciation.

On similar lines, one leg of the Guindy grade separator was completed and thrown open to traffic. There is a marked drop in the traffic build up already.

I agree PK. I admired DMK for building so many flyovers in the city ( very nicely built - thanks to private builders ) during their earlier regime.

Unfortunately, they lost the elections and the next Govt. didn’t bother.

Again - when DMK came back…I thought that was it..but looks like they are doing a decent job.

Would be nice if you a Pic. going along with your post…just to see how it looks.

    NV sir

sila bridges oda utility and purpose nichayam question pannuven, but this is not to deny some of the flyovers have served their purpose :)

same appreciation goes for some innovative traffic rulesi.e like making a big road one way and making the traffic switch sides simultanesously - Sardar Patel road, Ashok Pillar etc is downright scary and may not work in any other country. But it works in chennai and thats what matters.

PK, the quality of construction and the state of the tarmac leaves much to be desired…. and why a turn at the peak of the bridge? Bad design?

I dont wanna sound cribbish, but why is there no planning done before the bridges are built. There is still a pile-up at the coner during peak-time cos the side-lanes are still narrow. I’m aregular user of this road and I dont see much of a difference.

There is no point in calling them fly-overs. These are normal over-bridges constructed with votes in mind. There is no way the scene at Kodambakkam is going to change until something is done about the traffic between Vadapalani Busstand and Liberty Bridge.

In fact, as the joke goes, we would probably save more fuel (than the ships) if the Duraisamy Sethu and Kodambakkam Sethu are taken care-of. After all there would be no contro here. Everyone knows these are man-made :-)

You back in Managaram ? Cheers

These one ways have eased the traffic a lot. I feel comfortable in travelling those lanes than earlier.

    AAR,
    yeah it does save sometime.

The bridge that lands on C.P.Ramaswamy Road and passes by lifestyle is piece of shoddy work. The road is not badly properly at the top and it turns at the highest point. The Adyar signal bridge section turning into lattice bridge road is also a similar work of art.

  7. BNB Says:

oops, I meant the “The road is not banked properly …”

  8. prabukarthik Says:

    BNB,

I agree completely on these two points.

Have you ever wondered about the need for 2 flyovers in peters road - one after the other? I honestly don’t think the Satyam cinemas cross needs a flyover.
